The second pillar

2) Faith in the angels

One has to believe that…

  • They are noble and honourable beings : (Allah Almighty stated in His holy Book ” And they say, “The Most Merciful has taken a son.” Exalted is He! Rather, they are [but] honored servants.” 21:26)
  • They are there to do Allah’s command: (Allah Almighty stated in His holy Book “O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded”. 66:6)
  • They do not precede Allah in word : (Allah Almighty stated in His holy Book ” They cannot precede Him in word, and they act by His command.” 21:27)
  • They have no gender
  • They do not eat or drink
  • They do not sleep
  • They do not marry or reproduce
  • There are some angels created specifically to prostrate to Allah Almighty

In short, they are unlike humans and jinns who sin and will be accounted for in The Day of Judgement. There are 10 angels that are said to be waajib (compulsary) for us to know. They are:

1) Jibreel: His job is to reveal the Revelation (wahy) to The Prophet PBUH                                                                                                                                                      ( One might ask: “after the death of The Prophet, what is Jibreel’s job now?” Some Muslim scholars say that he will come down               when a Muslim dies in Imaan and has wudu’ (ablution) ). (Some say that he communicates between Allah Ta’ala and the Prophets and to whomever Allah wills (But I don’t know the authenticity of this) )

2) Mikaeel: The angel of provisions

3) Izraeel: The angel of death- The one who takes people’s soul on the command of Allah (some say that the name Izraeel is from the Torah and thus has been borrowed from the Jews, unbelievers, thus to say it is from Allah is kufur. In my opinion, Torah IS from Allah and it is among the 4 Books of Allah that is compulsory for us to believe in. Hence the name Izraeel may be from Allah as it is written in one of His books. Allah knows best.)

4) Israfeel :  The angel who will blow the Horn to 1)bring the universe to its end  2) To revive the creation to be accounted for their life in this world by Allah Almighty (Hisaab)  (Allah Almighty stated in His Quraan “And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on.” 39:68)                                                                                                                                                                                                                          One might say: If everyone dies, who will blow the Horn to revive all? The answer is simple. Pay close attention to what I have highlighted in the above verse and you will get your answer.

5) Raqeeb: The angel that writes down the good deeds (50:18)

6) A’teed: The angel that writes down the sins (50:18)

7&8) Munkar and Nakeer: The two angels who are assigned to question the souls of the dead in their graves about their faith, whether they are piety or not. Both of them look very scary, bluish black in colour.

9)  Ridhwaan: Guard of the gate to Paradise

10) Maalik: Guard of the gate to Hell

*One thing one must keep in mind: All these angels don’t do things on their free will. They only do things on Allah Almighty’s  command. We should also never worship angels (Allah Almighty stated in His Quraan “Nor could he order you to take the angels and prophets as lords. Would he order you to disbelief after you had been Muslims?” 3:80) . Another thing is that The Prophet PBUH is not an angel. (Allah Almighty stated in His Holy Book ” (…)nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me(…)” 6:50) The blessing in this is that if indeed an angel has been sent down, man would say that it is ‘ impossible ‘ for us to follow him as he is different from us. (Allah Almighty stated in The Quraan “And they say: “Why has not an angel been sent down to him?” Had We sent down an angel, the matter would have been judged at once, and no respite would be granted to them. If We had made it an angel, We should have sent him as a man, and We should certainly have caused them confusion in a matter which they have already covered with confusion.” 6:8,9

All good is from The Divine, while all bad is from me, just another weak slave…

Salaam (Please inform me of any wrong things I’ve said..JazakAllah)
